Volunteer Job Description: Boating Safety Ambassador – Joshua Murray Boating, Safety, Education, and Awareness Center

Position Summary:

Boating Safety Ambassadors serve as vital representatives of the Joshua Murray Boating, Safety, Education, and Awareness Center, engaging with the public to promote boating safety, education, and responsible lake recreation. They play a crucial role in providing information, distributing materials, supporting center activities, and connecting with the community.

Responsibilities:

  • Public Engagement and Education:
    • Greet and interact with visitors at the Joshua Murray Center, providing information about boating safety, educational programs, and center initiatives.
    • Distribute boating safety materials, educational resources, and promotional materials.
    • Encourage participation in training classes, workshops, and events.
    • Promote responsible boating practices, lake stewardship, and safety awareness to all visitors.
    • Assist in educating the public regarding the US Coast Guard Auxiliary presence, and the communication center.
  • Center Support and Program Assistance:
    • Assist with center events, including setup, guest registration, and facilitation of activities.
    • Provide support for educational programs, workshops, and community outreach initiatives.
    • Assist with basic administrative tasks as needed, such as organizing materials and assisting with visitor inquiries.
    • Potentially assist with the water safety club when they are visiting the center.
  • Community Connection and Liaison:
    • Act as a friendly and informative liaison between the boating public, local businesses, schools, and public safety organizations.
    • Foster positive relationships and promote a safe and welcoming environment at the center.
    • Connect visitors with resources and information from partner organizations, such as the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.
  • Safety and Reporting:
    • Understand and be prepared to implement emergency procedures.
    • Report any safety concerns, incidents, or maintenance needs to the Program Coordinator or Cornelius Police Liaison.
    • Adhere to center policies, safety guidelines, and code of conduct.

Qualifications:

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Enthusiasm for boating safety, education, and community engagement.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse community members, including youth, adults, and families.
  • Reliability, punctuality, and a positive attitude.
  • Willingness to learn and share information about boating safety and lake recreation.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Must pass a background check and fingerprinting.
  • Must attend a mandatory orientation.

Time Commitment:

  • Minimum of 4-6 hours per month or participation in one event per quarter.
  • Scheduled shifts at the Joshua Murray Boating, Safety, Education, and Awareness Center.
  • Monthly submission of volunteer hours.
